Discus belong to the cichlid family of fish. Their name comes from their disc like shape. The popularity of this of breed has grown in recent years and discus are now available in a range of colours.
This fish can grow to around 8 inches’ and are best keep as a group in a single species tank. Therefore they require a larger tank, I would say the bigger the tank the better when keeping discuss.
In their natural habitat they would live in soft acidic water, with a pH of around 6. Due to many areas of Britain having hard alkaline water, some fish keeper struggle to provide the right conditions to keep these delicate fish cichlids happy. Many Discuss keepers get around this problem by using water produced by a reverse osmosis system.
